RM30,000 for repairs on non-existent flat units



Contractors had claimed the amount of RM29,800 from the Kedah Housing Division for maintenance jobs purportedly carried at the Taman Sri Gemilang and Seberang Terus flats in Mergong, near Alor Setar, between 2010 and 2011 on flat units that do not exist.

National Audit Department found three units where the jobs were supposedly carried out were non-existent in accordance to the on-site checks carried out on Feb 23. In addition, the checks found that 10 maintenance jobs which supposedly involved for pipe replacements and ceiling fan installation worth RM14,740 were never carried out or not completed and claims for after-repair clean-up worth RM12,500 but turned out that the cleaning was carried out at only one house and more than once.

Auditor-General’s report state that five contractors appointed to carry out the maintenance jobs at some of the flats were found to be related to each other and one of the company “appeared to be unregistered” after conduct a company profile search with the Companies Commission of Malaysia.

The report also highlighted that “Based on a reply dated Feb 15, the commission also confirmed that one of the five contractors was not listed in the company registry records" and “A payment voucher worth RM500,000 was also given to the contractor, who had used a bank account and registration number of a different company”.

The department also added that the contractors to be blacklisted from future state government projects and payments are to be recovered for incomplete work. In addition Kedah Housing Division managed to recover RM86,259 from the contractors through the audit checks.
